The buzzwords for small business marketing currently are social media but many people ask me, “Exactly what is social media and how can it help my small local business?”
Social media is one of those words that is rather like a large umbrella … Sheltering beneath it are a number of marketing tools such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Youtube, blogs and a couple of newer ones like Google+ and Pinterest (and others), with the emphasis placed on relationships and getting to know you.
If you like, it is the equivalent of networking … online. Instead of turning up to your breakfast or lunch meeting, you are able to form a community where people can find you, interact with you, learn more about your business, ask you questions without leaving their office or home.
Like most things that are new and we don’t fully understand, it takes time for them to become a regular in our marketing arsenal, but with a little time and effort spent grasping the basics, you can soon be exploiting the huge marketing potential that the big boys in your industry pay massively to command.
You see, it is really a question of working smart, not hard. Getting the right information from the start allows you to master the marketing technique rather than it taking over your life.
There is no doubt that social media marketing is here to stay and those that decide to invest in its future will reap the rewards in the months and years to come.
